The PIIG will also horizon scan and take a view on upcoming issues. Issues covered will typically include (but are not limited to) topics such as: TAC issues; pelagic fish stock status and environmental impact; market support, particularly export; efficiency and species security. The aim is to establish a baseline understanding of the underpinning principles and then to build as high a level of agreement as possible, particularly as this relates to responsible, sustainable sourcing of pelagic products.
Seafish facilitates, chairs and provides the secretariat for the group. Participants at the Pelagic Industry Issues Group meetings are representative of the catching, fishmeal, and primary and secondary processing sectors in the UK, as well as members of the scientific community who are qualified to comment on sustainability and environmental issues, particularly in the context of the pelagic fishery. NGO's, legislative and enforcement authorities and other organisations may be invited to attend meetings as required. The group membership is UK-wide.
